Heads urged not to use volunteers on strike days

The National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT) has urged school principals to avoid using parent volunteers to supervise children on strike days.

NAHT general secretary Russell Hobby suggested that headteachers could find themselves under an "intolerable burden of responsibility" should something go wrong.

"For instance, even where such volunteers possess current CRB certification, there are issues of confidentiality, first aid training, knowledge of evacuation procedures in case of emergencies, safe use of equipment, behaviour management, knowledge of restraint procedures, guidance on physical contact with pupils and insurance liability to be considered," he commented.

Mr Hobby added that if education secretary Michael Gove values the quality of education provision in schools then he will listen to the concerns of teaching unions, who believe the profession is being damaged by the erosion of fair terms and conditions.

Strike action is set to take place across hundreds of schools on Thursday (June 30th).
