Employers and education providers from around the UK gathered to celebrate Vocational Qualification Day (VQ Day) this week.

Glenys Stacey, chief executive of qualifications watchdog Ofqual, said vocational qualifications can be extremely beneficial.

"VQ Day allows us the opportunity to pay tribute to the work of colleges, students, teachers, lecturers and employers but, more importantly, to recognise how vocational qualifications can enhance life and work chances of millions of people of all ages," she commented.

VQ Day was launched in 2008 in a bid to raise the profile of vocational qualifications.

A study carried out as part of this year's VQ Day celebrations revealed that 57 per cent of parents believe that a university education is less valuable today than in the past.

More than a third of respondents believe their children may have a better chance of success with a vocational qualification.
