Underperforming primary schools to become academies

The worst 200 primary schools in the country are to be turned into academies, it has been announced.

Speaking earlier this week, education secretary Michael Gove revealed that there are currently 1,400 primary schools below the minimum expected standard.

He noted that education systems across the world are improving much faster than in England.

"We have to set our sights higher. We should no longer tolerate a system in which so many pupils leave primary school without a good grasp of English and maths, and leave secondary school without five good GCSEs. We want all parents to have a choice of good local schools," Mr Gove said.

Other government plans include opening more sponsored academies, as well as collaborating with local authorities to tackle the worst performing schools.

Mr Gove claimed that evidence shows the academy programme has a positive impact on school standards and allows heads and teachers to run their schools without interference.
