ATL announces national strike date

The Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) has announced plans to hold its first ever strike on June 30th 2011.

Union members are voting over government plans to increase pension contributions.

ATL president Andy Brown said this date has been chosen to minimise disruption and avoid external exams.

"We do not want to strike, but unless we take a stand now the government will irreparably damage education in this country and children will lose out," he commented.

"The best youngsters will not want to become teachers or lecturers, young teachers won't be able to afford to join or stay in the pension scheme, older teachers will retire early, we will lose good teachers, lecturers and heads, and schools won't be able to recruit heads."

Mr Brown added that the union is pleased to hear the Department for Education is committed to working constructively with the ATL.

The ATL currently represents approximately 160,000 members across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
