Teachers vote to strike

Members of the National Union of Teachers (NUT) and the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) have both voted in favour of taking strike action over government plans to increase pension contributions.

In the NUT's strike Ballot, 92 per cent voted in favour of strike action, with a turnout of 40 per cent.

Of the 78,342 ATL members eligible to vote, 27,663 voted, with 83 per cent supporting industrial action.

"This is a warning shot across the bows to the government. When even the least militant education union and teachers working in private schools vote to strike the government would be wrong to ignore," ATL general secretary Dr Mary Bousted commented.

NUT general secretary Christine Blower said it is "disgraceful" that the government is pressing ahead with these planned reforms.

She added that the policy has "nothing" to do with needing to save money and "everything" to do with politics.
