Many parents are confused by the government's new tuition fee loan system, new research suggests.

A poll carried out by YouGov on behalf of Universities UK (UUK) found that a third of parents have little or no understanding of the plans, the BBC reports.

Of those surveyed, 56 per cent said universities should make it clear how students can benefit from the degrees they are offering.

UUK president Sir Steve Smith said the need for clear guidance on the new system is "paramount".

"As vice-chancellors we are aware that it is more important than ever that our universities go out and tell a positive story of what we can offer prospective students," he commented.

A spokesperson for the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills said it is important that students are aware that there are no upfront costs involved and that financial support will be provided for those from disadvantaged backgrounds.ADNFCR-2164-ID-800577366-ADNFCR
