University of Cambridge 'accepting more state school pupils'

The number of state school pupils attending the University of Cambridge is on the rise.

Figures released by the institution this week show that almost 60 per cent of home students are from the state sector, representing an increase of 0.8 percentage points compared to last year.

It was revealed that 99.5 per cent of students accepted last year achieved at least three A grades in their A-level exams.

"We're pleased that our admissions trends remain positive, but are also conscious that there is no room for complacency. Our research shows that students from all types of UK schools and colleges do equally well here, so we must keep reinforcing the message that Cambridge is a welcoming and inclusive place," said Dr Geoff Parks, Director of Admissions for the Cambridge Colleges.

He added that any student from a state school or college that has the ability to succeed at Cambridge should consider applying in October.

The university announced last month that tuition fees will be set at £9,000 a year from 2011.
