Religion 'should form part of English baccalaureate'

Religion should form part of the new English baccalaureate qualification.

This is according to church leaders from Yorkshire, who are calling for MPs to support a cross-party Early Day Motion calling for the subject to form part of the baccalaureate.

The West Yorkshire Ecumenical Council have said the subject is essential for understanding the history of Britain, as well as the ethical code upon which society is based, the Huddersfield Daily Examiner reports.

The English baccalaureate is awarded to GCSE students gaining A* to C-grade s in subjects including maths, science and a foreign language.

Alastair Ross of Kirklees Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education, commented: "Good religious education broadens horizons, stretches minds and builds bridges."

He added that religious education is now needed more than ever to teach children about different faiths and beliefs, as well as Christianity.

The Early Day Motion has been signed by Huddersfield Labour MP Barry Sheerman, among others.
