An increasing number of overseas schoolchildren are travelling to the UK to study, it has been revealed.

According to the 2011 census from the Independent Schools Council (ISC), the proportion of overseas pupils enrolling in British schools has increased by 5.5 per cent over the last year.

Of these, the majority are from China and Hong Kong, although the UK is also particularly popular with children from Germany.

ISC chief executive David Lyscom said independent schools are showing "remarkable resilience" in the face of the economic downturn.

"International comparisons continue to indicate that UK independent schools offer some of the best educational outcomes available, and we are pleased that, despite the widening of choices available, parents continue to trust our schools with their children's education in such large numbers. Education is after all the best investment that parents can make in their children's future," he added.

The ISC represents 1,260 schools across the UK, educating more than 500,000 pupils.
