Pupils learn traditional building techniques

Hundreds of schoolchildren from Devon stepped out of the classroom last week for a special visit to Launceston Castle.

More than 200 youngsters enjoyed special demonstrations and gained an insight into traditional building techniques, the Express and Echo reports.

The event was organised by English Heritage.

Sandra Stancliffe, director of education at the charity, commented: "This resource is not only relevant to helping local children understand the construction of Launceston Castle, but also many local buildings and maybe even their own homes.

"Our new resource gives pupils aged seven to 14 the chance to find out about techniques such as thatching, willow weaving and wattle and daub."

Teacher Emma Thompson said the scheme encourages children to take a greater interest in the built environment and is a great way to teach youngsters about restoration and conservation.

In other Devon education news, hundreds of children took to the streets last week to protest against the planned closure of Heddon special needs college in Barnstaple.
