An increasing number of people are changing their careers and training as teachers, it has been claimed.

According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, half of the people who have made recent inquiries with the Training and Developing Agency for Schools were from people considering a career change.

One person who decided to swap his previous career for life in the classroom is ex-plasterer Sean L'Amie, who is now deputy headteacher at a primary school in Wakefield.

"It took a lot of commitment. My wife had to go back to work to help support me and at first it was strange being with younger students," he told the publication.

Mr L'Amie added that no two days are ever the same for him now and said he plans to do headship exams next year.

One place where there may be more teaching jobs in the future is Blackburn, where a new secondary school is due to open next year.
