Welsh government supporting school Filmclub initiative

The Welsh government is to provide £170,000 funding for a new school Filmclub initiative.

The project is being supported by Port Talbot-born actor Michael Sheen and the Film Agency for Wales.

Children will be encouraged to write and talk about movies they have seen, connecting films to curriculum activities.

Education minister Leighton Andrews commented: "Young people love the movies and this fantastic project is using the world of film to expand the literacy skills and personal development of young people, a key commitment of the Welsh government."

Organisers of the project hope it will help to improve literacy, boost pupil confidence and improve communication skills.

This announcement comes a week after Welsh school inspection body Estyn said schools in the country must improve.

The organisation revealed that 40 per cent of youngsters are starting school with a reading age that is less than their actual age.
