Music is being squeezed out of the classroom by the government's failure to include it in the new English baccalaureate qualification, it has been suggested.
In a letter to schools minister Nick Gibb, Deborah Annetts, chief executive of the Incorporated Society of Musicians, said a number of its members have already noticed that the subject is being side-lined in their schools.
"Without music GCSE being given the weighting it deserves, our cultural and creative economy will be put at risk, and young people who want to be involved in the music sector will have their efforts hampered," she commented.
Ms Annetts added that the country is in for a shock in the future if they continue with this policy.
A spokesperson for the Department for Education said the government has protected £82.5 million of funding for music services this year and are reforming the system so that money is targeted where it is most needed.
