RE 'should be central to curriculum'

RE should form a central part of the school curriculum and be included in the new English baccalaureate qualification, it has been claimed.

Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, Rt Revd John Pritchard said he has serious concerns that the qualification does not include RE in the core of selected academic subjects.

To qualify for the English baccalaureate, GCSE students must achieve A*-C grades in five traditional subjects, including maths and science.

"Many testify to RE being the only space on the curriculum where they can explore their own beliefs and values and engage with people of faith in that exploration," he commented.

More than 110,000 people have now signed a petition calling for the subject to be included in the baccalaureate.

Speaking before last year's general election, prime minister David Cameron said any petitions with the support of more than 100,000 people will be debated in the House of Commons.
