A progress report on the independent review into Key Stage 2 (KS2) tests and assessment has revealed the opinion of people in primary school teacher and teaching assistant jobs to the controversial system.
According to surveys conducted by a committee panel, which is being chaired by cross-bench peer Lord Bew, most teachers and organisations believe that KS2 tests are well-developed and among the best tests of their type.
However, their views about the wider KS2 system are less complimentary, with several respondents highlighting the benefits of teaching assessment over testing.
"Teacher assessment is extremely rigorous in our school and we feel that this should be used to get an overall picture at the end of KS2," said one respondent.
"It could be administered more like KS1 - the test can happen at any point during the year and this can then identify weaknesses."
Education secretary Michael Gove said that the review will identify ways that KS2 testing, assessment and accountability can improve "particularly in light of the concerns of head teachers and teachers".
