Behaviour levels 'unacceptable at 1 in 5 schools'

Behaviour levels are below the minimum standards at one in five English secondary schools, the education watchdog has warned.

According to Ofsted, 550 secondary schools in England are failing to ensure that students behave in classrooms, the Telegraph reports.

Shockingly, some areas of the country are seeing more than 75 per cent of their secondaries fall short of behavioural targets, the inspectorate warned.

However, the remaining 82 per cent of secondary schools across the country were found to have good or outstanding behaviour, up from last year's percentage of 79 per cent.

Schools minister Nick Gibb told the newspaper: "We remain concerned that nearly 1 in 5 secondary schools' behaviour is judged as being no better than satisfactory.

"We support teachers to tackle poor behaviour in our schools because until we deal with the persistent low level disruption prevalent in too many classrooms, we will not see the rise in academic standards demanded by parents."

Earlier this month, Nick Seaton, secretary of the Campaign for Real Education, said that most teachers and parents believe pupil behaviour is getting worse.
