Schools 'must use pupil premium money effectively'

Schools must be given the right information and support to use their pupil premium money effectively, it has been suggested.

In an article for the Guardian, Jonathan Clifton of the Institute for Public Policy Research said the main issue is how well the money is spent, rather than the amount that is awarded per pupil.

"If recent history teaches us anything, it is that money on its own is not enough to improve our schools. There are countless examples of well-meaning attempts to raise attainment that have failed to have an impact," he commented.

Mr Clifton added that, worryingly, politicians have been focused on the size of the premium and have largely ignored the question of what the money should be spent on.

The pupil premium is designed to provide schools with more money for disadvantaged students and bridge the attainment gap between wealthy children and those from poorer backgrounds.
