Pupils, parents and teachers in Bolton were celebrating today as work got underway on a new £36 million superschool for the town.

Children from St Catherine's Academy and Firwood Special School will be brought together to share one campus from next year, catering for children between the ages of three and 19, the Bolton News reports.

In a joint statement released today (March 7th), academy headteacher Lee Harris and Dr Jonathan Steele, principal at Firwood School, said the new campus will strengthen the two schools' existing partnership.

"This event represents a milestone in our unique project. The considerable determination, vision, leadership and sheer hard work shown to get us to this day should be acknowledged," they told the publication.

Student Jake Clowes, 16, told the newspaper that pupils are looking forward to testing the new facilities when the school is completed.

In other Bolton education news, St Joseph's RC School has been awarded £10,000 for its Families Together initiative, which involves informal lessons on everything from parenting to communication for the parents of pupils.
