Derby academic Professor Dennis Hayes has published a new book on the teaching profession.

Entitled In Defence of Education, the book describes teaching as a profession "and not a craft", the Derbyshire Telegraph reports.

Professor Hayes is currently honorary secretary of the Standing Committee for the Education and Training of Teachers, and completed the book with the help of 15 other contributors.

"It should also be read by all those with an interest in ensuring that our children are taught by teachers who understand what they are doing and who believe that teaching is a profession and not merely a 'craft'," he told the newspaper.

"If the government is serious about developing its thinking about teacher education they must engage with the arguments that the book's contributors present."

Professor Hayes added that "serious discussion" needs to be had very soon about teacher training.

In other Derbyshire education news, pupils at Grange Primary in Long Eaton were recently given the opportunity to name a new housing estate located beside their school.
