A £38 million school rebuilding scheme has been given the go ahead in Scunthorpe.

Four local secondary schools are to be revamped, including St Lawrence Academy and St Bede's Secondary School, the Scunthorpe Telegraph reports.

However, the amount being spent on the schools is £4 million less than originally anticipated.

Local councillor Tony Gosling told the newspaper: "We've worked hard to ensure this will have no or very little impact on the quality of our original aspirations for the scheme.

"In most cases this has seen us use more of the existing furniture at the schools than we intended, use alternative suppliers and change building specifications."

In other Scunthorpe education news, pupils from the nearby Winterington Primary School recently won a national award in recognition of their environmental work.

Youngsters at the school have been working on a number of projects, including a new wildlife garden and recycled greenhouse.
