Teachers march against public sector cuts

Thousands of teachers descended on London on Saturday (March 26th) to take part in a planned protest against the government's public sector cuts.

Dr Mary Bousted, general secretary of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, said union members are concerned at the "savagery" of cuts, which will "hit hard".

"They fear there will be thousands of redundancies in education. It's not just teachers and support staff that will suffer, the children they teach will be badly affected by this too.

"Children are already being affected by the cuts to specialist educational services such as special educational needs support and many could lose the vital support they need," she said.

It is thought that around 450,000 people took part in the march.

Speaking to BBC One's Politics Show, business secretary Vince Cable said that although the government was listening to protestors, the coalition's basic economic strategy will not be changing.
