Budget 'will strengthen case for vocational qualifications'

George Osborne's Budget will help to strengthen the case for vocational qualifications, it has been claimed.

Spencer Melham, managing director of Notgoingtouni.co.uk, said it is important that these qualifications are viewed on par with more traditional ones.

"We've seen an enormous in traffic to our site over the last two or three months – it's been increasing by over 10,000 visitors a month," he said.

"We're getting more and more big employers creating apprenticeship programmes and starting to recognise that lots of very good young people have decided that university isn't necessarily the only option and that a lot of the bright ones are stepping out of degree programmes and looking for funded degrees, sponsored degrees, distance learning or apprenticeships."

Mr Osborne announced that £180 million will be provided to fund an additional 50,000 apprenticeships, with plans also in place to expand work experience schemes.

Mr Melham added that the Budget is a "step in the right direction".
