Some secondary schools are planning to cut their arts curriculum in order to steer pupils towards English baccalaureate subjects.
To qualify for the baccalaureate students must gain five A* to C-grade GCSEs in science, maths, a foreign language, English and a humanities subject.
Music, design and technology, religious studies and art do not count towards the qualification.
Speaking to the Guardian, John Steers of the National Society for Education in Art and Design said: "It is particularly strange because the creative industries employ so many British people. Of course the subjects in the English baccalaureate are very important, but alone they are not what makes a broad, liberal education."
He added that in the technological age we are living in, it has never been more appropriate to study design and technology.
Christine Blower, general secretary of the National Union of Teachers, said last month that the government should work more closely with educators when coming up with testing systems.
