Primary school pupils from across the south of Wales have been given the opportunity to showcase their artistic talents this month.

Dozens of youngsters have been involved in this year's Artists in Residence scheme, which is a joint effort between schoolchildren and PGCE students from the University of Wales Institute in Cardiff, Wales Online reports.

Isabelle Nash, a Year 6 teacher at St Mary's RC Primary School in Canton, told the news provider: "It's great to have expertise coming into a primary school and to let children have the experience of the knowledge and understanding of art and creativity.

"For them to have the time out of the curriculum to develop a project from start to finish is a special chance for them. It works so well every year. They are thrilled at seeing their work again which is fantastic."

In other Welsh education news, education minister Leighton Andrews recently called for a debate on the future of GCSE and A-level subjects in Wales.

He noted that it is important students are equipped with the skills they need to get by in the workplace.
