Dorset could become home to a new all-through free school if plans are approved.

The Parkfield New School group is seeking to open a facility catering for 390 pupils, the BBC reports.

The school would be based in Bournemouth or Poole, providing places for students from primary level through to sixth form.

Sarah Fryer, a spokeswoman for the school, commented: "We want the school to be in the best location to serve the largest amount of people in the Bournemouth and Poole area, so we are asking the public where they would like it to be."

She revealed that a public consultation is currently taking place.

However, not everyone is supportive of the government's plans to introduce free schools.

In an interview with the BBC, Manchester-based headteacher Ian Fenn said they are "divisive" and will be a "blot on the landscape".

"It's an affront to the teaching profession for people to think that schools can be run by people who know nothing about it," he argued.
