The number of teachers using technology during lessons is on the increase.
Research carried out by Netgear revealed that over half of teachers (58 per cent) now use IT in every class, Education Executive reports.
Paul Donovan, a spokesman for Netgear, said young people are extremely comfortable with technology today.
"It's clear that teachers are seeing an opportunity to harness this familiarity to connect with children through new and creative channels," he explained.
"The role of IT in a school has changed. As opposed to simply providing teachers and students with computers, schools must now think about how they can make the most of technology in the broadest sense."
According to Toucan Computing, schools must rise to the challenge of incorporating students' own devices such as iPods and smartphones into formal lessons.
Steve Bonnick, a spokesman for the company, said there is a big gap between what children learn in IT at school and what they teach themselves at home.
