Students from one Preston college attended an event aimed at encouraging them to study languages this week.
Year 12 pupils at Cardinal Newman College were told that languages are becoming increasingly important in the current employment market, the Lancashire Evening Post reports.
The event was organised by local French businesswoman Lory Barreau, who told the publication: "The number of students studying languages has fallen dramatically and we want to encourage them by showing that it is not just for holidays or teaching. Having a second language can open up all sorts of doors."
Other speakers included former University of Central Lancashire student Nadia Tan Panza, who said that having a language is a transferable skill.
"It is a skill that can be combined with any number of careers and opens doors," she added.
The National Centre for Languages revealed earlier this year that fewer pupils are choosing to study foreign languages, particularly in state schools.
