A head teacher who acts as the government's expert adviser on behaviour has published a simple checklist for people in teaching jobs which is aimed at helping instil good classroom behaviour.

Following a recent 'behaviour summit' in which outstanding head teachers from deprived areas gathered to discuss key principles surround improving pupils' behaviour, Charlie Taylor has drawn up the 'Getting the Simple Things Right' document.

At the summit it was clear how much similarity there was between schools' strategies and compiling them, the list outlines straightforward actions that can help teachers maintain discipline in the classroom.

Mr Taylor said that without good behaviour teachers can't teach and pupils can't learn, but if teachers get discipline right it can make this less of an issue.

He said: "Often the problem is that they aren’t being consistent with their behaviour policy such as ensuring that punishments always happen every time a pupil behaves badly."

The publication of the checklist coincides with a Department for Education (DfE) announcement that a new trial of school exclusions is taking place in over 300 schools across England.

The full checklist can be viewed on the education.gov.uk website.
