A primary school in Southampton is set to be given a total overhaul after council bosses approved plans for a £7.5 million rebuild.

Newlands Primary School is to undergo a complete transformation and will be expanded to accommodate 420 pupils, as well as a nursery, the Southern Daily Echo reports.

It will feature 28 classrooms, as well as impressive outdoor sports facilities and a new hall.

Southampton councillor Paul Holmes told the news provider: "It's excellent news that we are able to move on with this important project. This is a demonstration of our commitment to improving school buildings in the city and shows that the council is still investing in Southampton’s schools.

"The new building will be a great asset for the wider community in Millbrook as well as an inspirational learning environment for our young people."

In related news, it was revealed last week that Peterborough City Council is planning to open a new £7.5 million primary school to accommodate the rising number of young people living in the area.
