Nearly half of graduates believe their time at university has not provided them with the skills they need for the world of work.
In a survey carried out by jotaljobs.com, 44 per cent of respondents said they feel unprepared.
Furthermore, 24 per cent of graduates said they would not recommend that current A-level students go to university.
Of those questioned, 43 per cent said they would choose a different course if they had their time over again.
Mike Fetters, graduate director at the website, said: "The reality is that as a country we haven't been very good at creating graduates who are specialised in areas that employers are demanding."
He added that the recession has "exposed this brutally" in the form of high levels of graduate unemployment.
Figures released this week by the Office for National Statistics found that levels of unemployment for graduates have risen two-fold in recent years.
