A Welsh education expert has urged the government to ensure that home-schooled children are properly monitored.
Speaking to Wales Online, David Egan, professor of education at the Cardiff School of Education, suggested that tighter regulation is needed.
"What we have to do is establish what level children that are home-schooled in Wales are achieving in comparison to those in school," he told the news provider.
"There may be a number of reasons for parents to do this, but to what extent is the decision to home school a child something that is checked?
"We just don't know what the situation is with home schoolers at the moment and questions need to be asked."
His comments come after statistics released by the Welsh Assembly Government revealed that almost 1,000 pupils have been taken out of local authority education.
In other Welsh education news, the country's minister for education last week unveiled a high-tech digital plaza at Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw school in Torfaen.
The area features everything from television broadcasting equipment to video conferencing facilities.
