Blackburn-based technology firm Promethean has unveiled a new state-of-the-art iPad-style school whiteboard.

It can be linked to the internet and teachers can write on the screen at the same time as their pupils, the Lancashire Telegraph reports.

The ActivBoard 500 Pro-series was put on show at the recent BETT 2011 education technology exhibition.

Promethean chief executive Jean-Yves Charlier told the newspaper: "The ActivBoard 500 represents the most significant advance in interactive whiteboard technology since it was first introduced in schools.

"The intuitive pen and touch capabilities deliver engaging and collaborative teaching and learning opportunities, for both teachers and students."

Meanwhile, an electronic sign-in system developed in Barnsley by Osborne Technologies Ltd is to be rolled out across schools in the UK.

According to the Grimsby Telegraph, it has already been installed in 50 schools and colleges.
