Schoolchildren are learning more about technology at home than they are in the classroom.
This is according to Steve Beswick, director of education at Microsoft, who said it is important that young people leave schools with "appropriate" IT skills, the BBC reports.
In an address at the BETT Show for educational technology in London, he noted that schools are lagging behind, with the majority of teenagers engaging more with technology at home.
"Rather than pushing back something like Facebook, it's a matter of finding out how it can work for learning," Mr Beswick commented.
"Technology isn't the answer to everything. But it can be a useful tool, it can light up a subject."
He added that some of the skills youngsters develop from using social networking sites can be transferred to employment.
Speaking last week, Steve Bonnick, director of Toucan Computing, said schools should integrate devices such as smartphones and tablet computers into lessons.
