KPMG to fund degree programme for school-leavers

KPMG has announced plans to fund a study programme for 75 school-leavers attending Durham University.

The accountancy firm said it will pay tuition fees, as well as a £20,000 starting salary from September 2011.

"We are really excited about this scheme which we think is genuinely ground-breaking and innovative," said Oliver Tant, UK head of audit at KPMG.

"For us, one of the key things is to ensure fair access to the profession by ensuring the greatest number of young people possible go to university - and also have the potential to train as an accountant. We need an accountancy profession that is as diverse and as open as it can be."

This comes a month after MPs voted to increase university tuition fees from 2012, with some students set to pay up to £9,000 per year for their education.

Universities minister David Willetts said he welcomes KPMGs school-leaver programme, adding that it offers youngsters another way into this prestigious profession.
