Exams 'could get tougher'

GCSE exams and A-levels could be made more challenging in the future, it has been suggested.

Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, education secretary Michael Gove said it is important that the tests taken by British schoolchildren are as tough as those sat by their European counterparts.

Qualifications watchdog Ofqual recently stated that GCSE science is still too easy.

Mr Gove claimed the previous government ignored his warnings that tests were not rigorous enough.

"We will ask Ofqual to report on how our exams compare with those in other countries so we can measure the questions our 11, 16 and 18-year-olds sit against those sat by their contemporaries in India, China, Singapore, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand and Canada," he commented.

Young people will increasingly be competing for jobs and university places on a global level, so it is vital that young people from the UK are able to compete, he added.
