Local authorities anticipate that approximately £15 billion will be needed over the next five years to fund the cost of school refurbishment work and make classrooms safe.

It is thought that almost £5 billion will be required during the 2011/12 academic year.

Analysis carried out by the Local Government Association (LGA) and the Association of Directors of Children's Services found that almost £5 billion is likely to be required during the next academic year.

"Spending money to maintain or replace existing school buildings is unavoidable. Areas experiencing booming birth rates need to be able to expand primary schools so that every child has a place not too far from their home," said LGA chairman Margaret Eaton.

She added that children need schools which are clean, safe and attractive places to learn in.

The new coalition government made the controversial decision to axe the Building Schools for the Future initiative when it came to power in May.
