The majority of parents have a common sense approach to education and want to see their children properly disciplined, it has been suggested.

Speaking earlier on BBC Radio 4's Today programme, education secretary Michael Gove said mothers and fathers "want proper uniforms, strict discipline, academic subjects rigorously taught and not some of the wild and wacky theorems that have distracted some of our schools from delivering on the basics over the last 20 years".

The minister said that one of the biggest problems we have in this country is the assumption that some youngsters are not capable of studying subjects such as history and modern languages up to the age of 16.

As a result, children have often been written off by the time they are 11, Mr Gove added.

The education secretary said earlier this month that it is vital to restore confidence in the exam system and ensure that British pupils are able to compete with youngsters from other countries.ADNFCR-2164-ID-800073069-ADNFCR
