School libraries 'not being used to full potential'

Many school libraries across UK are not being used to their full potential, it has been claimed.

A report published by the School Library Commission concluded that many resources are currently being wasted.

The organisation noted that approximately a third of those working in school libraries do not have a thorough knowledge of children's literature.

Staff should have access to training and work more closely with teachers to ensure that pupils make the most of the facilities on offer to them, the report stated.

"They have to be more than just places with books," said Baroness Estelle Morris, the organisation's chair.

"They need to be integrated with the rest of the school, librarians working with teachers, rather than remaining separate domains."

A recent report by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport revealed that use of adult libraries has fallen steadily in the UK over the last five years.
