Providing schoolchildren with good career guidance is essential, it has been claimed.

Sarah Clover, business development manager at notgoingtouni.co.uk, said it is important that people realise university may not be the most suitable option for everyone.

"It is essential that young people are properly informed about the alternative ways that they can successfully advance in their chosen career, rather than forcing them all down the academic route in a 'one size fits all' approach," she commented.

Ms Clover claimed it is vital that parents, teachers and other influencers are aware of the opportunities that exist outside of university and help young people to make educated and informed decisions about their futures.

A report published earlier this year by education inspectorate Ofsted found that the level of career guidance given to students varies considerably between schools.

In addition, the organisation noted that many pupils are being advised by people without proper qualifications in this area.
