It is vital to ensure that children master the fundamentals of maths and English before they begin secondary school, schools minister Nick Gibb has

Ensuring that children have a good command of maths and English before the age of 11 is essential, according to schools minister Nick Gibb.

He noted that despite the hard work and efforts of students and those in teaching jobs, this year's Sats results show that one in five youngsters are not reaching the expected level in English and maths by the time they leave primary school.

"Getting the fundamentals right – being able to read and write and having a solid foundation in maths – is crucial to a child's success in secondary education and throughout their adult life," Mr Gibb commented.

He added that externally validated tests provide parents and teaching professionals with valuable information and play an important role in establishing accountability and gauging the standards of the country's primary schools.

Girls generally outperformed boys in this year's Key Stage 2 exams, particularly in the areas of reading and writing.
