GCSEs are a crucial stepping stone in life for young people, whether they plan to continue in education or enter the world of work, it has been claimed.

Speaking yesterday (August 24th), schools minister Nick Gibb congratulated teachers and students on their hard work.

However, he said there is still more that needs to be done to ensure that children from poorer backgrounds are given the opportunity to succeed.

"While celebrating individual success and welcoming the fact that there has been an enormous take-up of GCSEs in the individual sciences, we believe that more needs to be done to close the attainment gap between those from the poorest and wealthiest backgrounds," Mr Gibb commented.

The minister welcomed the news that there has been a significant increase in the number of students opting to take individual science GCSEs.

However, figures released yesterday show that fewer students are taking exams in subjects such as French and German.
