Many of this year's A-level students will be left without a university place and may have to consider taking an apprenticeship, it has been suggested.
In an interview with the Independent, Mary Curnock Cook, chief executive of the University and Colleges Admissions Service (Ucas), said there "won't be an open-ended number of places so there will be disappointed applicants".
She noted that university candidates without a place will need to look at alternative options for September, news that may be of interest to those searching for teaching jobs.
"These include re-applying next year, if that's the right thing for them, or taking up apprenticeships, which the government is quite keen on," Ms Curnock Cook commented.
She added that Ucas staff will be on hand to assist school-leavers on A-level results day.
Sarah Clover, business development manager at notgoingtouni.co.uk, recently claimed that taking a more vocational approach could be a sensible option for many people.
