Parenting lessons 'could benefit teens'

Many children are keen to learn about parenting at school, it has been suggested.
In an interview with the BBC, Birkenhead Labour MP Frank Field said thousands of youngsters lack positive role models.

"I was knocked sideways when I asked a group of 15-year-olds in Birkenhead what would they most want from their school if they were setting the school contract, and every one of them said they wanted to know how to be good parents," he commented.

Mr Field, who is the current government's poverty tsar, said he is investigating whether parenting modules could be incorporated into the national curriculum or if a separate GCSE could be created.

Shadow education secretary Ed Balls said earlier this year that he would like to see compulsory parenting lessons taught as part of personal health and social education.

He noted that lessons could help youngsters to understand the implications of teen pregnancy.
