Thousands of school leavers are likely to be left disappointed and unable to secure a university place next month. However, they should use their time constructively and consider taking a gap year, it has been claimed.
Speaking to the Guardian, Mike Griffiths of Northampton School for Boys suggested that some pupils may stand a better chance of getting on their desired course if they re-apply next year.
"In the meantime, try to be selfish and think about what would help your career most in the next five years," he commented.
Aaron Porter, president of the National Union of Students, pointed out that there are still many training, volunteering and work opportunities out there.
"Talking to a service like Connexions will help you decide what option is right for you," he commented.
A report published by the same newspaper earlier this week revealed that many universities are already full and have no places to offer through clearing.
