New facilities will benefit education jobs

The announcement of a series of new building projects in the education sector could mean new facilities will be available to aid those in teaching jobs.

Fears had been expressed that the coalition government may scrap the Building Schools for the Future scheme initiated by the Labour administration.

However, Oldham Council has announced that infrastructure company Balfour Beatty has been selected as the preferred bidder for £175 million worth of construction contracts, the Manchester Evening News reported.

Under the plans, eight schools in the area will be upgraded, while an entirely new project will be built in Chadderton.

Ian Tyler, chief executive of Balfour Beatty, welcomed the news, saying the contract would deliver "excellent design and value" as well as a boost for the local economy.

Under the Building Schools for the Future scheme, the Labour Party pledged to renovate or remodel all of England's 3,500 secondary schools.
