Competitive school sports 'set to return in schools'

The coalition government has announced plans to reintroduce competitive school sports as the London Olympics draws nearer.

Sport England will distribute funds of around £10 million per year to support moves to have local, regional and national finals in many different sports over the next two years, the Express has reported.

Paralympic events will also be introduced to maximise participation for school pupils.

Included in the list of sports highlighted by education secretary Michael Gove are football, rugby, tennis, athletics, swimming, cycling, volleyball and judo.

"Sport - whether you win or lose - teaches young people great lessons for life. It encourages teamwork, dedication and striving to be the best that you can be," Mr Gove commented.

The London Olympics begins on July 27th 2012 and the government is hoping to use the event to boost sports participation in schools.

Track cycling is one of the areas where Great Britain is looking to pick up some medals, which could also help get youngsters out on their bikes.
