Gove reassures those in teaching jobs about equal opportunities and access

In a speech to the National College's annual conference, education secretary Michael Gove promised those in education jobs that the new academies will be subject to the same admission regulations.

He said the government's move to set up academies would provide schools with the autonomy to be successful, following the lead of countries like Canada, Sweden and Finland.

Successful applicants to the academy scheme will be given "the freedom to develop their own curriculum and fully control their own budget and staffing", the education secretary said.

He noted that 1,772 schools had registered an interest in becoming academies, of which 870 were already classed as outstanding by Ofsted.

Of these top institutions, more than 400 were primary schools.

Mr Gove said that the total number of outstanding schools to register an interest was around 70 per cent of the country's total.

Membership of the National Council, formerly known as the NCLSCS, is free and is available to all school governors.
