History curriculum 'could change to encourage Britishness'

History teaching jobs in schools could be altered to promote Britishness, it has been reported.

The Conservative party is considering new ways to encourage a greater understanding of the history of the country, with security minister Baroness Pauline Neville-Jones looking to increase integration of minority communities, wrote Dr John Bew, on the BBC website.

Although traditionally resistant to such an approach, the party is now considering what can be done in schools to emphasise important events in the past in order to improve cohesion between ethnic groups.

The Conservatives previously criticised similar plans proposed by Gordon Brown, saying it was too overt and American in its approach.

Now, the party is considering a variety of options, but could find it contradicts their plans to give individual schools more power to choose the curriculum, while the rising number of faith schools may prove to be another obstacle.

Last month, Harvard Professor Niall Ferguson was chosen to help advise the government on education policy, according to the Guardian.
