Including celebrities in modern English language study helps youngsters to put their learning to practical use.
This is the claim made by Robin Hughes, national manager of the examining board OCR Cymru,
He defended changes to the English Language GCSE that could have pupils studying comments made by actors, newsreaders, TV presenters and singers.
Mr Hughes explained that people in teaching jobs would be helping students to look at how these people express themselves using communication skills.
He told the Western Mail that it would "encourage learners to apply the knowledge they are gaining".
OCR Cymru has been criticised for the spoken language element it will be introducing in the next academic year.
Nick Seaton of the Campaign for Real Education told the news source that it constituted "dumbing down".
The exam board opened in Wales in 1994 and works with more than 400 education bodies in the country.
Its support staff speak both English and Welsh.
