A programme designed to build on teachers' skills is having a positive effect on pupils too.
The Assembly Government of Wales commissioned Estyn to examine the Continuous Professional Development scheme and found that schools have enjoyed numerous benefits.
As well as assisting those with teaching jobs, the project led to pupils developing more confidence and becoming higher achievers, the Western Mail reports.
Under the system, which is handled by the General Teaching Council for Wales (GTCW), teachers can apply for funding for sabbaticals or activities to help further their professional development.
But according to lead inspector Penny Lewis, many staff in teaching jobs are not using the GTCW website to its full potential in helping them to plan.
A self-regulating and self-funding body, the GTCW aims to maintain and improve standards among the teaching profession in the country.
It has 25 members, 12 of whom are teachers who have been elected by others, while the remaining four are appointed by the government.
